If you’re a first time mum to be, shopping for your baby can often become overwhelming; there are so many things to think about and so many different products out there. But don’t despair, The Cuddles Co are here to help, that’s why we have compiled the ultimate baby shopping list for new mum, in which we aim to teach you what you actually need, and what you could possible live without.
Things you need!
Nappies
nappies are the first thing you should start to buy for your baby, even if there’s still months before the precious little one ( or ones ) arrive. its really surprising how many nappy changes a new baby will need, therefore it’s a good idea to stock up on a few boxes to get you through the first week or so, the last thing you need during that time is to be stressing about nappies or lack of them!
Bodysuits/baby vests
These are a classic baby essential, and it’s always a good idea to have a few body vests for your baby, these are great for wearing under other clothing or even on their own in summer.
Sleep suits/ all in ones
Sleep suits are another classic baby essential, many babies will spend the first few months of there life wearing sleep suits, and to be honest there really no need to wear anything else. Many sleep suits have built in feet, and often the smaller sizes sleep suits will often have fold over scratch mitts, so there perfect for dressing your little one, during the early stages of there life.
Hat
A baby hat is a must for a new baby, especially when leaving the hospital ( most midwifes will actually recommend you bring a hat with you to keep the baby warm on its first encounter with the great outdoors.)
Socks
Although most sleep suits have built in feet, there will be times when your baby isn’t wearing something with built in feet, and for times like this, it is a good idea to have at least 2 pairs of baby sock. When it comes to baby socks The cuddles co recommend soft touch brand baby socks, these socks seem to say on a little ones feet far better than any others, and they also come in lots of funky pattens.
Bibs
Babies have a tendency to dribble during feeding and occasionally will vomit afterwards. Without bibs you would need to change your baby’s clothing a number of times per day to keep them looking and feeling clean, however the use of a simple bib will prevent the need to change your baby’s clothes, as the bib can easily be soiled and changed umpteen times a day, with no effort or without disturbing your little one.
Scratch mitts
A couple of pairs of scratch mitts are essentials for new born babies. A babies nails grow extremely fast and become sharp quickly, so if their nails are unprotected your baby risks scratching there delicate skin. A pair of scratch mitts however, means that your baby skin is safe from scratches, without the need to cut there delicate little nails.
Feeding bottles
Even if you plan on breast feeding your baby, it always a good idea to have a couple of bottles handy. It may not always be convenient to breast feed, and bottles are the best alternative. Having a couple of bottles handy can also mean that your partner could feed the baby ( extremely handy during the night, to give you much needed rest.
Moses basket
Moses baskets are great for the early stages while your baby is still small. These can be easily and safely moved around the home, leaving a safe, comfortable place for your baby to relax, while you relax anywhere around the home. There also great for taking around other people’s houses, the small mobile design allows for easy transportation, especially when combined with a folding stand. The main downside of the Moses basket is that babies can outgrow these after half a year, however the savvy shopper could easily create a Moses basket from scratch, simply buy purchasing the basket, mattress and Moses basket dressing separately.
Changing mat
Baby’s need a lot of changing, and they also need somewhere comfortable to be changed, buy a good padded changing mat for at home, most are pvc coated and therefore can be easily cleaned, and a cosy hand towel is a good idea to lay on-top of the mat to keep your baby’s back nice and warm.
Changing bags
Channing bags come in all shapes and sizes, and there is no one which I could suggest, it’s all really just a matter of individual. There is a variety of colours, shapes (messenger, traditional, rucksack …) and sizes available, but the key thing is to buy a bag which will fit in all the equipment you need with you on the go.
Things you don’t need ( but may just come in handy)
Activity matts
An activity mat is a great way to entertain your baby during the early months, the bright colours and different textures help to stimulate their young mind.
Nursery rhymes book/app
Everyone knows a nursery rhyme or two, but how many do you really know all the words to? No one want to be half way through rock a bye baby and realise you don’t know the words and end up making up your own version (never quite the same as the original, if your anything like me that is) A nursery rhymes book is a great way to reefs you nursery rhyme knowledge, and the book will always bring back the sweetest memories every time you look back on it in the years to come. An app for your smart phone is also a good idea, if you have an apple or android etc. there even a number of nursery rhyme apps that are free of charge.
Baby bouncers/ rockers
These are a god send, there that good I nearly put this one in the you need this item section. You can pop your baby in one of these, and they will be play happily, leaving you the chance to get some much needed relaxation, safe in the knowledge your baby is being entertained safely. The rocking and bouncing motion is also good for the development of your babies balance.
Bath thermometers
Babies have a tendency to get messy ( I know, shock, horror) a bath thermometer is a handy device to easily check that the temperature of your babies bath is ideal. Gone are the days of forever dipping your elbow in the bath every two minutes to check the temperature, not an essential but for less than £3 pound, well worth it.
Other top tips…
Everyone I’m sure, at some point when shopping for your new-born baby will see something so cute, you just have to have it for your baby, for example that cute little outfit or little pair of shoes. Its ok give into temptation now and then, but our top tip is buy the outfit in a few sizes to big i.e. for a new born (7.5lbs) buy 3-6 months, you will get lots of outfits as presents when your baby is born, and people tend to purchase new-born or 0-3 months, so chances are you will have lots of this size once the baby is born, so buy a size or two bigger and you will save in the long run.
