Audi have a new supermini which pays honour to one of the most successful rally cars ever created by Audi.
The A1 Quattro might be based on the three door, front-wheel-drive A1 hatchback but thanks to the German firm fitting the latest version with four-wheel-drive and a turbocharged 256bhp it makes more than a nostalgic nod to the iconic Ur-quattro of the Eighties, which is fondly remembered for being Gene Hunt’s motor of choice in the BBC show Ashes to Ashes.
There’s no plan to bring the rally-styled A1 Quattro to Britain just yet – only 333 examples are being made, and they’re all left hand drive – but the company’s already hinted that if enough UK customers ask them nicely enough they might change their mind.
